What happens when we stop asking children to pose, smile, or be anything other than exactly who they are?

Simply Me is a black-and-white portrait project celebrating the personalities, expressions, quirks, and beautiful individuality of children in our community.

For one special evening, these portraits will come together in an art show created to say something simple but powerful to every child featured:

We see you. We celebrate you. And who you are is worth remembering

An Artshow All About Them

Childhood is full of personality.

The belly laughs. The serious faces. The wild hair. The missing teeth. The silliness. The confidence. The shyness. The expressions parents know by heart.

Simply Me was created to preserve those pieces of childhood without asking kids to perform for the camera.

Throughout the evening, you'll experience a gallery of black-and-white portraits featuring local children exactly as they are.

Not perfect.

Not posed.

Simply them.

And for the children walking into the gallery and seeing themselves displayed as works of art, our hope is that they leave knowing:

There is something extraordinary about being exactly who you are.

An Evening With a Bigger Purpose

Simply Me isn't only about celebrating children.

It's also about helping families grow.

Through this year's Simply Me Project,

$1200 has already been raised for Catholic Charities and its Pregnancy & Adoption Program.

This mission is especially close to our family's heart.

Our own family grew through the blessing of adoption during a time when we didn't know if we would ever have the opportunity to be parents again.

Because of that experience, supporting expectant parents, children, and families

touched by adoption is deeply meaningful to us.

Simply Me gives us the opportunity to celebrate the children already in front of our cameras

while helping support families whose stories are still unfolding.

$1200 raised — and a community of children celebrated.

Hi, I'm Joy!

I’m the photographer behind Capture Joy Photography and the heart behind the Simply Me Project.

As a photographer—and as a mom—one of my favorite things is getting to really see a child for who they are. The big personalities and the quiet ones. The belly laughs, silly faces, serious expressions, missing teeth, wild energy, and everything in between.

That’s why I created Simply Me.

I wanted to give kids a space where they don’t have to perform, pose perfectly, or give me their “camera smile.” They simply get to be themselves.

And then we do something pretty special with those photographs: we turn them into art.

There’s something powerful about a child walking into a gallery and seeing their own face displayed on the wall. My hope is that every child featured in Simply Me looks at their portrait and feels, That’s me. And I’m worth celebrating.

This project is also deeply personal to our family. Our family grew through the incredible blessing of adoption during a time when we didn’t know if we would ever have the opportunity to be parents again. That experience is part of why supporting Catholic Charities and its Pregnancy & Adoption Program through Simply Me means so much to us.

Simply Me brings together so many things I care about—children being seen, families being celebrated, community coming together, and giving back.

I can’t wait to welcome you to the art show and introduce you to the incredible kids who made this project what it is.
